RAEWYN PENROSE

My Art
Artist's Statement

Raewyn, an internationally recognised professional fibre artist, operates her studio/gallery just south of Coromandel Town on SH25. Her time is split between creating one-off pieces for commissions and sale in her gallery, conducting felt-making workshops and hosting small group tours for overseas felt-makers. Workshops are regularly held in her studio, but she also teaches in other parts of NZ, Australia and Europe. The workshops offered are suitable for all skill levels.

Fine NZ merino wool, a superior natural and sustainable product, is the primary base material,. Silk and other natural fibres are often incorporated to add texture and effect. Merino based felt is a durable and lightweight product where colour, texture, form and functionality can all be combined into a wide range of unique outcomes, from fashion clothing and accessories through to art. Raewyn is constantly experimenting to develop new techniques and visual effects, and enjoys sharing this knowledge with her students.

She still regularly participates in exhibitions and fashion parades, both in New Zealand and overseas, both as an exhibitor and in a judging capacity. She has held the NZ Creative Fibre ‘National Tutor’ status for over 20 years.
