My Art

Artist's Statement
I’ve recently moved to Coromandel after completing an artist's residency at Driving Creek. This incredible opportunity helped to propel my art practice in new directions.
My latest collection of mythological birds are inspired by this lush landscape home to many species of endemic birds. Each sculpture is a unique creation, reflecting the interwoven relationships between flora and fauna and geological formations. These sculptures bring together ceramic, cast bronze and glass, with recycled paper and leaves. They reveal textural layers evocative of this land, decorated with shimmering colours
and ceramic glazes.
My work has been extensively exhibited throughout Aotearoa, and I’ve created several large-scale public sculptures in Waitakere city including a giant 6m Moa Mountain at the Massey Leisure Centre and was the lead artist for the New Lynn Library in Auckland. Iona graduated from AUT in 2013 obtaining a PG diploma in Art and Design.
For the 2025 Arts Tour I will be based at the wonderful Kay Ogilvie’s studio "The Gannet's Nest" in Wyuna Bay and will have a selection of my latest mixed media sculptures on display.
